| The song that introduced me to the "mashup" or "bootleg remix" genre was probably "You Humped Me All Night Long" which not only paired the vocals from one song with the music from another, it also cut & pasted the AC/DC guitar riff and looped it as a backbeat for the Black Eyed Peas lyrics. I'm sure this has been done in professional music for a long time only they called it "sampling" but it opened my eyes to what a club DJ or amateur editor could accomplish. It inspired me to create my own mashup "Ice Under Pressure" and to continue seeking out more amateur/semi-pro mashups online. When I'd found this group of songs I realized that most of my friends had never been exposed to mashups so I threw them all on a CD, credited all the original artists and DJs, created some cover art and started handing them out just to share the music. I attempted not to include any artists more than once on the CD to give the widest variety of musical styles. That's why track 18 is listed as a "Bonus Track" on the cover, I was originally not going to use Eminem twice but I wound up throwing that song on the disc just to fill the available space since at the time I hadn't found any other mashups I liked. I also obviously used Queen twice (but once for the music #14 and once for the vocals #15) and Snoop Dogg twice (though once was as the main artist and another as the guest). So I guess I didn't stick to my own rule, but that's still the explanation for the "bonus track." |
